Batventure

Batventure is a game in which I was the designer and producer for during the Weekly Game Jam, week 144 “Into the dark” which was hosted on Itch.io – https://weeklygamejam.itch.io/
Batventure can be played in browser @ https://cous.itch.io/batventure

Batventure is a game created for the weekly game jam hosted on itch.io

I worked on all aspects of design for this project, such as the design of; game systems, levels and UX in which I also sourced and distributed the fonts we would use with the project to relevant team members.

I worked as the producer managing the scope of the project and also team members tasks across multiple time zones, Brazil, USA, Poland and UK. From this role it also meant I was in charge of recruiting a new sound designer when the original sound designer of the team had to sadly leave the project.

For the menu system a prototype was developed in Adobe XD, show I was able to show my UX design to the team before it was implemented.

Some of the menu options were cut from the final build due to them not being needed, as the game is played in a web browser.

Designing the levels quickly using excel to quickly block out the layout for this platforming game, I could then easily transfer those designs into Unity and conduct QA.

What can be seen above in the level design screenshots is the sonar mechanic. The player can send out sound waves to watch their reflection to see where the obstacles are within the level. If the sonar wave reflects red, it means it has reflected off a hazard, which when collided with the player will die and the level will restart. If the player sees a green sonar reflection it means thats the end of the level.

I was also in charge of submitting the game build to itch.io and to the Weekly Game Jam, submission section. In which I was also in charge of writing any information the player might need to play the game. Also on itch.io I monitor the games comment section to listen to the community

From this project I learnt:
– Furthered my game and system design efficiency by using the Process of Design
– Learnt how to manage a small team of developers across multiple time zones
– Engaging with the community for feedback on the project developed

Software used:
Microsoft Excel – Level planning
Adobe XD – Menu mapping
Unity – Mechanics tweaks and testing
Discord – Team communication

Soft skills:
Process of design
Communication
Teamwork
